Furniture put on the market

This indicator presents the number of new pieces of household furniture that are put on the market (POM) every year. It is expressed both in number of pieces and in terms of weight, and aims to provide information on the new inputs required to fulfil consumer needs.

2.8 million pieces

  • In 2019 the estimated number of pieces of furniture POM was around 2.8 million.
  • The total weight of these pieces was 76 kt.

What do we see?

There are currently no trends or analysis for this indicator. They will be added to this page as soon as enough data becomes available.

What’s the aim?

In a circular economy we aim to reduce the number of products and the amount of resources that are needed to fulfil a certain function. The ideal scenario would therefore be a decrease in the number of new pieces of furniture POM, combined with an increase in their use efficiency and intensity.

What does this indicator measure?

This indicator shows the amount of household furniture needed per year. The data was provided by OVAM for 2019 and was based on the average financial expenditure – around €700 per year – on furniture per household. However, this is only a rough estimate and further analysis is required.
