What do we see?
In 2020 there were 156,744 social housing units being rented out in Flanders. This continued the upward trend of recent years. As the graph below shows, most social housing units are rented by social housing companies (SHM). The rest are rented by social housing offices (SVK).
What’s the aim?
Social housing offers an affordable solution for people who are homeless or living in poverty. In addition, it is also an interesting way to increase the use efficiency of existing homes. Social housing offices provide a good example of this: they rent homes from private owners to then let them out as social housing. The result is fewer empty properties and better use of the available homes.
What does this indicator measure?
This indicator shows how many social housing units are being rented out in Flanders. The data comes from the Flemish Association of Social Housing (VMSW).
