Material footprint of the building stock

This indicator measures the material footprint of the Flemish construction industry and housing on a yearly basis. The figures are expressed in kilotonnes.

28,936 kt

In 2016 the material footprint of the Flemish construction industry and housing totalled 28,935.6 kt.

What do we see?

Between 2012 and 2016, we see a downward trend in the material footprint. As the chart below illustrates, the construction industry is responsible for the largest share of the material footprint (54%).

What’s the aim?

In a circular economy, we aim to reduce our material footprint by using fewer new materials. One of the ways we can achieve this is by using the materials that are already available in a more efficient way in order to keep our demand for new materials to a minimum.
