EEE in households

This indicator shows the number of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) present in households.

224 million units

  • In 2022, an average Flemish household owned 78 units of EEE.
  • Most are white goods and ICT products.

What do we see?

In 2022, a Flemish household owned an average of 79.7 EEE goods. The majority of these were white goods (32.4 items), ICT (16.8 items) and brown goods (12.7 items). Extrapolated for Flanders, this amounts to 224 million items. The numbers are quite steady over the years. Additional data on lighting are available for the 2022 data year: this amounts to 25.6 units per household or 71.6 million units in Flanders.

What’s the aim?

In a circular economy, we aim to fulfill needs as effectively and efficiently as possible with products and services, which ideally last as long as possible, provided this does not compromise their environmental performance. Circular strategies such as repair and reuse but also the sharing of EEE goods deserve encouragement to extend the life of appliances and intensify use. To make the analysis more complete, data are also needed, for example, on the use status of products.

What does this indicator measure?

This concerns brown goods (sound and visual electronics), white goods (small and large household appliances), ICT goods, DIY and garden equipment. The data were provided by Recupel and come from the biennial possession measurement. Lighting was included for the first time in the latest measurement.
