Circularity

This layer brings together indicators that portray the circularity of the entire Flemish economy.

The so-called R-strategies (reuse, recycle…) have the aim of closing cycles. Inflows are the amounts of resources our economy needs and outflows are what our economy emits.

Inflow

This group of indicators shows the amount of resources (water, fossil fuels, biomass, metals and other materials) we use in our economy each year.
Direct Material Input (DMI) of the Flemish economy
342.3 million tonnes

Direct Material Input (DMI) of the Flemish economy

By Direct Material Input (DMI) we mean all materials that physically enter the Flemish economy for both domestic consumption,...
Domestic Material Consumption (DMC) of the Flemish economy
164 million tonnes (24.7 t/cap)

Domestic Material Consumption (DMC) of the Flemish economy

The Flemish material consumption or Domestic Material Consumption (DMC) shows how many materials are consumed within Flanders. This includes...
Water consumption
739 million m³

Water consumption

Water is an essential resource for people and the economy. Because it is a finite resource, closing water cycles...

R-strategies

This group of indicators shows to what extent we are closing cycles in Flanders. How much do we recycle and reuse? How much secondary (recycled) raw materials do we produce and use? etc.
Share of industrial waste getting a second life
67%

Share of industrial waste getting a second life

Primary industrial waste is the waste produced by companies (excluding waste from the waste processing sector). This indicator...
Household waste recycling
65.6% effectively recycled

Household waste recycling

This indicator shows the extent to which household waste in Flanders is recycled, composted or fermented.
Production of secondary raw materials
25.8 million tonnes

Production of secondary raw materials

Secondary raw materials are originally by-products or materials that have reached the end of the waste phase and can...
Reuse indicator
238 kt (35.5 kg/cap)

Reuse indicator

This indicator measures circular reuse in Flanders. By reuse, we mean that when someone no longer wishes to use...
Repair indicator
10 million repairs

Repair indicator

This indicator shows the repair of products in Flanders.
Circular Material Use Rate (CMUR)
16.3%

Circular Material Use Rate (CMUR)

The circular material use rate (CMUR), is the ratio of circular use of materials to overall material use. It...

Outflow

This group of indicators shows what emissions our economy produces. How much residual waste do we produce? How much CO2 is released each year? etc.
Production of household waste
416 kg/cap

Production of household waste

Household waste is all waste collected by, on behalf of or in cooperation with municipalities or intermunicipal authorities. It...
Production of residual household waste
128 kg/cap

Production of residual household waste

Residual household waste is household waste that is not collected selectively. It therefore refers to general household rubbish, bulky...
Production of primary industrial waste
13,999 kilotonnes

Production of primary industrial waste

This indicator shows the production of waste generated by the original waste producers.
Production of primary industrial residual waste
872 kilotonnes

Production of primary industrial residual waste

Primary industrial residual waste is the part of primary industrial waste that is offered or collected non-selectively, and is...
Incinerated, co-incinerated and landfill waste
4.58 million tonnes

Incinerated, co-incinerated and landfill waste

This indicator measures how much waste is incinerated, co-incinerated or landfilled.
Littering and fly-tipping cleaned up
18.2 kt litter / 28.6 kt fly-tipping

Littering and fly-tipping cleaned up

Litter is smaller waste that is consciously or unconsciously left in a place where it is not allowed. Fly-tipping,...
Territorial emissions
73.4 Mt CO₂-eq

Territorial emissions

This indicator shows the production of emissions contributing to climate change.
