Circularity

This layer brings together indicators that portray the circularity of the entire Flemish economy.

The so-called R-strategies (reuse, recycle…) have the aim of closing cycles. Inflows are the amounts of resources our economy needs and outflows are what our economy emits.

Inflow

This group of indicators shows the amount of resources (water, fossil fuels, biomass, metals and other materials) we use in our economy each year.
Direct Material Input (DMI) of the Flemish economy
342.3 million tonnes

Direct Material Input (DMI) of the Flemish economy

The Direct Material Input (DMI) of the Flemish economy shows the total material consumption by Flemish companies and households....
Domestic Material Consumption (DMC) of the Flemish economy
132.3 million tonnes

Domestic Material Consumption (DMC) of the Flemish economy

The Domestic Material Consumption (DMC) of Flanders indicates the amount of raw materials consumed directly by the Flemish economy....
Water consumption
748.8 million m³

Water consumption

Water is an essential resource for people and the economy. Because it is a finite resource, closing water cycles...

R-strategies

This group of indicators shows to what extent we are closing cycles in Flanders. How much do we recycle and reuse? How much secondary (recycled) raw materials do we produce and use? etc.
Industrial waste recycling
68.0% recycled

Industrial waste recycling

Primary industrial waste is the waste that is produced by companies (excl. waste from the waste-processing sector). Recycling is...
Household waste recycling
63.8% recycled

Household waste recycling

In Flanders we try as much as possible to recycle waste that cannot be reused. The type of waste...
Production of secondary raw materials
28.8 million tonnes

Production of secondary raw materials

Primary raw materials (minerals) are extracted from soil or water. Secondary raw materials are by-products or materials that have...
Reuse indicator
221 kt (33.8 kg/cap)

Reuse indicator

This indicator measures circular reuse in Flanders. By reuse, we mean that when someone no longer wishes to use...
Circular Material Use Rate (CMUR)
20.7%

Circular Material Use Rate (CMUR)

The circular material use rate (CMUR), also known as circularity rate, is the ratio of circular use of materials...

Outflow

This group of indicators shows what emissions our economy produces. How much residual waste do we produce? How much CO2 is released each year? etc.
Production of household waste
477.2 kg/cap

Production of household waste

Household waste is all waste that is collected by the municipalities or intermunicipal authorities. It includes not only waste...
Production of residual household waste
143.5 kg/cap

Production of residual household waste

Residual household waste is household waste that is not collected selectively. It therefore refers to general household rubbish, bulky...
Production of primary industrial waste
16,374 kton

Production of primary industrial waste

Primary industrial waste is all waste that is generated by the original producer and therefore not during subsequent processing....
Production of primary industrial residual waste
948.3 kt

Production of primary industrial residual waste

Primary industrial residual waste is the part of primary industrial waste that is not selectively presented or collected. Primary...
Incinerated, co-incinerated and landfill waste of Flemish origin
4.44 million tonnes

Incinerated, co-incinerated and landfill waste of Flemish origin

Flanders aims to incinerate or send to landfill as little household and industrial waste as possible. Yet there are...
Littering and fly-tipping
29.5 kt of fly-tipping

Littering and fly-tipping

Littering is when people leave behind, consciously or unconsciously, smaller items of waste (e.g. tissues, bits of paper…) in...

Territorial emissions

In Flanders, processes such as waste disposal, food production and storage, goods transport, production of goods, and fuels together...
