Car sharing

This indicator shows the number of car-sharing memberships in Flanders.

173,759 users

  • In 2022, there were 173,759 registered users of car-sharing systems, of which 67,578 were active users.
  • The annual growth is accelerating.

What do we see?

Car sharing has gained a lot of popularity in recent years. The number of memberships has risen to more than 170,000 by 2022. The trend shows a clear acceleration. The number of active users has only been monitored since 2021: it is more than half the number of registered users, but an increase is also visible here.

What’s the aim?

Car-sharing is a circular business model par excellence: it optimises the intensity of car usage and is a strategy to meet mobility needs with fewer cars. Moreover, car sharing offers an option to consider alternative modes of transport sooner. Initially, we want car sharing to become more established. We see this reflected in the current data showing an accelerated increase in both the total number of registered users, and the number of active memberships.
