What do we see?
Over the years, about 96% of construction and demolition waste is recycled in Belgium. We can assume that the figure for Flanders is similar.
What’s the aim?
Construction waste is generated by construction, demolition and municipal activities. In a circular economy, it is important to recover these materials to reduce the demand for primary raw materials. Indeed, much of the construction waste can be reused without having to tap into new materials. However, the quality and composition of the streams is proportional to the quality of their next application. In a circular economy, we try to avoid downcycling as much as possible. Few data are currently available to map the quality of the reuse of material streams from construction and demolition works.
What does this indicator measure?
This indicator reflects Belgium’s recycling rate of construction and demolition waste. The data were received via OVAM, based on data from Eurostat.
