What do we see?
Car sharing has gained a lot of popularity in recent years. The number of memberships has risen to more than 170,000 by 2022. The trend shows a clear acceleration. The number of active users has only been monitored since 2021: it is more than half the number of registered users, but an increase is also visible here.
What’s the aim?
Car-sharing is a circular business model par excellence: it optimises the intensity of car usage and is a strategy to meet mobility needs with fewer cars. Moreover, car sharing offers an option to consider alternative modes of transport sooner. Initially, we want car sharing to become more established. We see this reflected in the current data showing an accelerated increase in both the total number of registered users, and the number of active memberships.
What does this indicator measure?
Autodelen.net periodically reports the number of memberships of car sharing systems as known at the beginning of a year, counting as the figure for the past year. The data are a sum of the memberships of the various systems offering car sharing, whether round trip, free floating or private. Registered users are persons who are customers or members of a car-sharing organisation, whether or not through payment of an entry fee and/or a periodic subscription fee that gives the user access to the organisation’s shared cars. Active users have made at least one trip in a car-sharing car during the last year. The number of active users/car-sharing organisations gives a more accurate picture of effective usage, but there may still be double counting in the situations where the same user has taken a car-sharing ride through different systems within a year.
