What do we see?
In Flanders, at least 66% of distances travelled were covered by car in 2020. The train comes second, with a share of at least 9%. Since the emergence of electric bikes, their share has risen to at least 1% by 2020.
What’s the aim?
In a circular economy, we want to fill mobility needs with as little consumption of materials as possible. This implies a move towards (much) more use of shared and active forms of mobility. The Flemish Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030 sets a target of a share of sustainable travel modes of at least 40% by 2030. The figures shown express the shares differently in person-kilometres, but illustrate that the above target is still a long way off.
What does this indicator measure?
The data come from the Travel Behaviour Survey, a survey organised periodically by the Department of Mobility and Public Works, and were taken from the Mobility Report of the MORA.
The figures are an approximation of the distances travelled because of the limitations of the survey. Until 2017, very accurate figures, based on the annual increase in mileage per vehicle, were made available by the FPS Mobility and Transport.
